The Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) is a dark brown Australian moth with a wingspan of 40 to 50 mm. Each spring, from early September, it migrates up to about 965 km from the lowlands to caves in the Australian Alps, where it rests over summer. It returns to its breeding grounds in autumn.
The moths are food for animals such as the endangered mountain pygmy-possum, and Aboriginal peoples have long gathered them in the mountains. Numbers have fallen sharply since around 1980, and in December 2021 the IUCN listed the species as Endangered. The decline is mainly attributed to drought and rising temperatures in the caves.
